Commentary: Google’s latest study shows AI use is growing, but developers aren’t overwhelmed

From Trend to Tool: AI Enters the Developer’s Routine

AI Becomes a Daily Tool for Developers

AI has officially gone mainstream in software development. A new Google survey shows that 90% of developers now use AI tools at work, compared to just 14% in 2024. That’s an explosion in adoption, and it’s clear that AI is no longer just a trend — it’s part of the daily workflow. Even more telling, about 65% of developers say they heavily rely on AI tools to get things done.

So how much are they really using it? On average, developers spend two hours a day working with AI. And it’s not just for show: about 80% say AI makes them more productive, while 59% report their code quality has improved. Whether it’s speeding up tasks or catching errors, AI seems to be giving developers an edge.

Still, many are keeping their guard up. Only 24% say they trust AI outputs “a lot”, showing that while the tools are popular, they’re not fully trusted. Developers see AI as a helpful sidekick — great for cutting repetitive work like boilerplate code — but not a replacement for human judgment. The human touch in problem-solving and design still matters, maybe now more than ever.

Interestingly, developers don’t feel threatened by AI. Instead, they believe their expertise is still valued and necessary. The survey makes it clear: AI might be doing the busywork, but developers still drive the big ideas, oversight, and creative problem-solving. In other words, AI is changing how work is done — but not what it means to be a developer.

The survey also points to a big takeaway for companies: AI works best in strong, well-organized teams. In workplaces with poor systems or weak communication, AI can actually highlight the cracks instead of fixing them. For businesses, the message is simple — if you want AI to boost your teams, you’ll need the right culture and processes in place. Otherwise, AI might just make the mess louder.
