A New Era of AI-Driven Healthcare in Punjab

Challenges Ahead: Training and Trust

Punjab is taking a bold step in healthcare. The government has teamed up with ACT Grants to bring AI-powered portable screening devices to eight districts. The goal? Catch diseases like breast cancer, cervical cancer, and vision problems early — and save lives. These devices will be used in local clinics and rural areas, where access to advanced care is often limited.

The tools are designed to be simple and safe. Thermalytix by Niramai checks for breast cancer without radiation, Smart Scope by Periwinkle screens for cervical cancer quickly and painlessly, and Forus Health’s Portable Autorefractometer tests for vision problems in minutes. They’re easy to carry, don’t need big hospitals, and can be run in small towns and villages.

The need is urgent. Punjab saw 42,288 new cancer cases in 2024, up 7% from 2023. Even worse, very few women get screened: only 0.3% of women aged 30–49 have ever had a breast cancer check, and just 2.4% for cervical cancer. These numbers show why the state had to act. Early detection is key — and right now, too many cases are found too late.

The plan is ambitious. Every day, the state aims to do at least 600 vision screenings and 300 breast and cervical screenings with these AI tools. This could take pressure off big hospitals, give patients answers faster, and create more trust in preventive care. But success will also depend on staff training, community awareness, and follow-up treatment.

Still, the message is clear: Punjab wants to bring modern healthcare to everyone, not just city hospitals. If the program works, it could be a model for other states in India — and even other countries. This is AI at its best: not just fancy tech, but a tool that helps people live longer, healthier lives.
